These letters, which document a prominent Cambridge, Maryland family, were selected from the Bayly Family Papers at the Nabb Research Center (2009.316). They include letters sent to Alexander Hamilton Bayly, Delia Bayly, Edgar Bayly, Josiah Bayly, Julian Bayly, Kate Bayly, and, primarily, Washington Bayly.
The family patriarch, Josiah Bayly (1769-1846), was the Maryland Attorney General for many years; his letters in the selection only represent a small part of his correspondence found in the papers. Josiah's son, Alexander Hamilton Bayly (1814-1892), was a notable doctor. Alexander Hamilton Bayly married Delia Byus Eccleston (1818-1879) and had eleven children. Four of the children of Alexander Hamilton and Delia Bayly are well represented in these letters: Josiah Washington Eccleston [J.W.E.] Bayly (1838-1926), Kathleen Ambrosia Bayly Skinner (1845-1928), Julian Bayly (1849-1891), and Edgar Bayly (1852-1932). Washington Bayly’s correspondence comprises a majority of the selected letters and, while he lived in Louisville, Kentucky, the letters were primarily sent from Dorchester County, Maryland. A.H. Bayly's son joined the Confederate Army during the American Civil War, which was discussed in some letters.
